There's too much build up and hype for his fight to not be totally let down by it. I would bet money Mettaton NEO's boss fight was always intended to be a joke. Can't tell if Mettaton NEO was originally intended to be basically that but time constraints had it scrapped, or if Toby was legit like 'actually this shmup thing is too much fun and it would be weird if genocide was fun so enough of that' Still a bit disappointed we didn't get a super hard version of that. Was why I was convinced she would show up and fight you in a Genocide run and be even more literally a Touhou boss than Undyne was. Mm, for all intents and purposes Mettaton is a proxy for Alphys in the endings (and sort of in gameplay, like how Alphys's bit against Asriel is the same as the Mettaton's battle), despite his entire thing of 'i was being a proxy for Alphys but ENOUGH OF THAT TIME TO GET FABULOUS' It makes Papyrus' call about you three hanging out a lot more sad instead of funny. I've been under an impression for a long while that it just ends if you mercy kill her and by trying not to you just pretty much prolong a drawn out and horrible death so.at the very least i was wrong about that?ĭuring my first run I didn't know what to do with Undyne so I killed her and I felt so bad I immediately reloaded and tried it again. This is actually what happened to me the first time around, because I was both under the impression that killing a single enemy completely blocked you off from sparing Undyne, and that there's no way you could just run away from a boss fight, so I tried to do the attack stuff until sparing, figuring maybe Toriel was just the exception to that, or maybe that she was even scripted to die no matter whatĪnd the whole time she was all fading away I just kept trying to spare her like, surely this is the right thing right? and then she melted. I my opinion, it's probably one of the saddest moments in the game, along with the Snowdrake mother fight and the end of Asriel's fight.

Here, she's desperately trying to cling to life, full of regrets. In genocide, she dies believing she's accomplished her goal. The music that plays during Undyne's scene is actually this segment a minute into 'An Ending'.
